Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are a 100% preventable lifetime often hidden disability that happen when women drink while pregnant. Red Shoes Rock began as a visibility campaign in 2014. R.J. Formanek, founder and moderator for the adults with FASD Facebook support group called Flying With Broken Wings begin wearing a pair of red sport shoes to bring visibility to his hidden disability when he spoke and advocated for himself.
WHY DID WE START THE “RED SHOES ROCK”?
Because our ”Littles” matter. Our ”Littles” are the children like Mac growing up with the challenges of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and Trauma before birth. The children, adults and families who joined us are advocates to help make a difference for the next generation. Today they stand together to help parents, professionals and other caregivers begin to understand the challenges from the inside out. They are no longer whispering. They have a voice.
In 2014, after a month of hospitalization for Jodee’s daughter the dream of Red Shoes Rock was born to increase the visibility of the celebration of FASDay to build awareness and we are grateful to Brian Philcox, Bonnie Buxton and Teresa Kellerman for being the brave souls who initiated this dream on 9.9.99 at 9:09.
We believe we can Rock Out Awareness of Fetal Alcohol in a positive spirit! Together, we created a grassroots and fun movment to build awareness for FASD. We used wearing Red Shoes as our symbol and the double meaning of Rocks as part of our slogan. We set up a Facebook page called Red Shoes Rock. Stop FASD. and we took on the world by challenging people to a Red Shoes Rock for FASD Awareness Movement – 9 rolls, 9 steps, 9 kicks, 9 nods, 9 waves, 9 blinks, 9 km or 9 miles a day – we love movement! Walk, Run or Wheel 9 or 90 Km or Miles in 90 Days!
We give ordinary people, extraordinary voices to show that better endings are possible and new beginnings can be achieved with powerful stories to inspire, build hope and provide wisdom to change the world one person at a time.
RJ Formanek and Jodee Kulp began #RedShoesRock Stop FASD FaceBook Initiative in 2014 with a 30 day challenge beginning on August 10 – their initial dream was to stop the stigma and build visibility – That first event was successful with over 10,000 new viewers and families and children having fun sharing their shoes.
Their program was simple:
1. Put on a pair of RED SHOES
2. Share your Rock Out Photos for the next 30 days on our page
3. When someone asks about your shoes – TELL THEM ABOUT FASD!!!!
4. Share our page – share our messages – share the fun… doing 9 of anything movement. Then we got our social media MOVE ON with likes and share and red shoes rocking.
Red Shoes Rock 2015 campaign created visibility for persons living with FASDs. We continued our 2014 program of Walk, Run or Wheel 9 or 90 Km or Miles in 90 Days! Get out and have fun with creating visitibility for persons with FASD. We added 60 days of ideas for a great FASDay and we encouraged visibility in fun and exciting ways for persons living with FASDs. Our mission was to enhance the power of the individual voice and create a powerful presence. We provided free downloadable flyers and certificates for completing any movement of 9.
We increased on campaign to 60 days by using that time to prepare for community grassroots events for International FASDay – September 9. We shared ideas and tips to make a difference.
Red Shoes Rock 2016 campaign empowered our people. In 90 days we reached 150,886 views by sharing the brave stories of individuals living with FASD. This brought opportunity for discussions regarding the challenges of living with FASDs previously avoided by extended families and friends. The shares and likes on FaceBook reached into extended families, employers and friends to open the doors of light into the reality of the challenges of prenatal exposure to alcohol. Ninety-two people, some dogs, a cat, a lizard, a bird and a caterpillar joined us on this journey. Our campaign reached 42 countries around the world. One mom went 900 kilometers in her shoes and then joined us in 2017 in the next years development – Our Sacred Breath with Yvonne Williams.
